Principals Panel Discussion on Innovation in Education

“As leaders in education, our job is not to control those whom we serve, but to unleash their talent.  If innovation is going to be a priority in education, we need to create a culture where trust is the norm.” - George Couros

EduDrone- WE CONNECT in association with OMOTECH, MASTERCLASS and Adventure Education organised a school principals panel talk on innovation in education.

Mrs Kajal Chhatija, Founder, EduDrone and Mr. Shekhar Jain, Co-Founder, On My Own Technology initiated the session by setting the tone of the panel discussion on the topic. Mr. Jain urged the Leaders that students must get enough opportunities to create, innovate and celebrate the inventions.

To reinforce the topic, Mr. Sudhanshu Shekhar Nayak, the Principal of Podar International School, Pune very categorically put forward the TPJ (Tod, Phod, and Jod) model  where the learners (standard III onwards) were encouraged to dismantle certain products of their choice at home, re-create the product and if possible re-produce it.  Learners were given a free hand to think aloud, put their imagination in the forefront and focus on creating something of their own.

He also shared how storytelling can really make the difference for engaging students in the right perspective, to create the stimulus/impulse and response processes. This would really help as the facilitator may display five key areas of TLA (subject knowledge, language quality, student engagement, student outcome and classroom culture) in tandem to make the teaching-learning process interesting, engrossing and enriching.

He further highlighted that NEP 2020 suggests a shift from testing, rote memorization to competency based learning.  Both the teacher and parent can play a vital role to expose the child to different types of impulses.  Child is like a clean slate - it is the responsibility of the teachers and parents to write an excellent program as a professional programmer to enable NIPUN Bharat.

Further Ms. Dhara Mehta - Cambridge Early Years Head, Pune, emphasied that

innovation in education should be recurring and reviving. It helps to match the scale of the solution to the scale of the challenge. It is imperative to integrate newness, technology and be abreast with latest advancement. Global Education with a balance of self and connected learning is inevitable. Reflective Learning to keep making timely changes and advancement helps increase motivation in learners. Positive learning environment acts as a catalyst to our educators and our students as well. Last but not the least leaders and mentors must continue with vibrant and rigorous grooming and training. Rightly quoted by Jamie Notter "Innovation is change that unlocks new value."

Dr Madan Mohan, the Vice Principal of Symbiosis International School, aptly emphasized on the view of mastery model being the future of pedagogical practices which focuses on ensuring learner achievement.

He shared the secret of magic created in classrooms in his school through a

trans disciplinary approach. Through this the interconnected nature of various disciplines is made evident to the learner. He also laid emphasis on equipping the students with financial literacy, critical thinking, collaboration and other life skills and prepare them to make the world a better place.

The Shark Tank approach, inculcating the Design Thinking principles, encouraging student activism to change the school community, creating paperless ecosystem , artificial intelligence and augmented reality in classrooms were some of the myriad innovative ideas that he shared from his kitty.

‘The difference lies in how we treat the syllabus’ was a profound statement which resonated with the audience.

To culminate the panel discussion, Dr. Sonal Patil, Principal and Zonal Head, Rahul International School, quoted that 'Perfect practice makes man perfect' to recreate the perfect examples and master pieces. Educators must explore technology in a safe way as their school has created a digital I-card for their students. It ensures safety and security of the students and an automated message is delivered to the parents. They follow a level-wise theme based learning and leaders ensure that it is followed in the classrooms.

The schools mission is to make students global citizens, build international outlook ensuring Indian values.

Towards the end all the leaders appreciated Mrs. Chhatija for creating a social platform for educators.

Mrs. Mehta shared, "Edudrone has ignited the ideas of Innovation in Education through such wonderful discussions. Wishing you goodluck and best wishes as we continue to stir up best practices in the field of education."
