Tamil Nadu: School education commissioner denies reports of the three-language formula

The Tamil Nadu school education commissioner has denied reports stating that Tamil Nadu would be adopting the three language formula.

Dismissing a few reports that stated that 'discreet’ attempts were being made to make Tamil Nadu adopt the three-language system, the state school education commissioner on Sunday said that there was no move to switch to a three-language formula. An official release further stated, "Tamil Nadu has made its language policy clear on many occasions."

NO NEED TO HAVE APPREHENSION OVER LANGUAGE SUBJECT

The release went on to say, "Tamil, which is the mother tongue, and the global-link language English have been in vogue (in the State) as per the two-language formula."

It added that learning Tamil is compulsory till Class 10 as per a 2006 Act, whereas students who have Telugu or Malayalam or Kannada or Urdu as their mother tongue can learn their respective language too.

"Therefore, people need not have any apprehension over the language subject policy which has been made amply clear and must not believe in reports that are contrary to facts and misleading," the release remarked further.

MADRAS HC ON THREE LANGUAGE POLICY

Inquiring into the challenge of making Hindi the third language in educational institutions, the Madras High Court's first bench had earlier observed that if one does not study Hindi, finding work in North India would be tough.

The bench, which comprised Acting Chief Justice MN Bhandari and Justice PD Audikesavalu, made these observations while hearing a PIL petition seeking to implement this into the central government's National Education Policy 2020.
