My K-12 journey
I had started my leadership journey a few years ago. When I look back, I feel proud of the milestones achieved so far. Our institution was founded in 1975 with only 2 students.
Right now we have an extended family of around seven thousand students and thousands of alumni and parents who are still attached with us. It is a great opportunity for me to share my experiences at this prestigious platform. I am privileged to have been guided by very enthusiastic and dedicated management members in my initial stage. Then, with the commitment to excellence, we kept on setting new milstones of success. I am handling all administrative work of Little Flowers Group of Schools and Hospitals under the guidance of my superiors and support of fellow workers. By keeping open communication, treating others with respect, giving value to others’ suggestions, I have earned trust and respect from my peers and subordinates. They come to me directly whenever they have any problem. I have implemented on their suggestions and the results are fruitful so we have developed a strong bond.
‘A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.’
Being a progressive leader I have a futuristic vision and I am capable of turning my ideas into real world success stories.
My Leadership style :
i. Integrity
As stated by Dwight D. Eisenhower, “The supreme quality of leadership is unquestionable integrity. I also believe that I can lead others with my example only. In our institution, all the teachers stick to the values and ethics and our every action is for the welfare and progress of our students.
ii. Confidence
I reflect my confidence to ensure that my followers trust me as their leader and try to instil confidence in them as well. I identify their talent and give them certain responsibilities that gradually boost their confidence.
iii. Being a Source of Inspiration
As a leader I display my positive approach in my actions. I stay calm under pressure and keep the motivational level up.
iv. Commitment and Passion
I get involved in maximum projects and infuse new energy in my team members. If they lack passion, then it will be an uphill task for anybody to motivate them to achieve the goal. When my team members observe my commitment and sense of responsibility, they also follow the same and sometimes do much better than expectations.
v. Decision Making Capabilities
Apart from having a futuristic vision, I have the ability to take the right decisions at the right time. I firmly believe that the decision taken by the leaders have a profound impact on masses. So, I think about all the pros and cons before making any decision and then stand by it. I also consult key stakeholders and consider their valuable opinion.
vi. Delegation & Empowerment
I focus on key responsibilities and distribute the rest among others according to their capabilities and interest. I can’t and shouldn’t micromanage my subordinates. I have to give them some liberty and power. I provide them with all the resources and support they need to achieve the objective and give them a chance to bear the responsibility.
vii. Creativity And Innovation
It is well established that ‘Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.’ In order to get ahead in today’s fast-paced world, I have to be creative and innovative at the same time. I strive to think out of the box to come up with unique ideas and turn those ideas into reality. I have introduced Robotics Club, 3D Graphics Club, Photography Club and ensure maximum participation of students in Inter School Activities and competitions.
viii. Empathy
I can’t follow a dictatorial style if I want to nurture the talent of my team members. I understand their problems and make a close connection with them I think from their perspective and provide them with the suitable solution to their problems.
Being a leader I set good example for others to follow.
My Commitment to Community
I am a constant learner, so I challenge myself to get out of my comfort zone and surround myself with like-minded smart people. Apart from providing best possible education to the students in my institution, I try to create an impact in the community, beyond classroom. I am associated with various prestigious organizations that work for environment conservation and other good causes such as giving donations to the Prime Minister Relief fund, organising health check-up camps, blood donation camp, distributing warm clothes, masks, oxygen cylinders, PPE Kits, etc.
Commitment to good cause implies a strong commitment to the business. When my peers and students observe me involved in the acts of kindness. They also follow the same with enthusiasm.
Even some of my students and teachers are associated with some NGOs and they are also involved in ‘Adult Literacy Program’ by teaching the class four workers and maintenance staff after school time.
Our education system requires changes according to the pace of the world. The speed at which technology is growing and expanding, it is almost impossible for us to resist it .We have created a smart learning environment in our institution. Our smart classes use all interactive modules which empower learners for learning beyond a routine curriculum. We also organise workshops and seminars based on effective learning, career counselling, stress management, life skills and so on for the holistic development of our students. These days online classes have become crucial for all. We trained all the teachers and kept on updating them for creating and using latest online resources. By being approachable, I enable my subordinates to share whatever challenges they might be facing and then I address those issues effectively. With futuristic vision,we initiated STEM education much earlier in our institution.
STEM EDUCATION- A PORTAL TO NEW WORLD FOR SMART LEARNING
We are already familiar with the term STEM - that is Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. I must add here that experiential learning is not confined to Science and Mathematics only. It is incorporated in all the subjects. When we teach things practically, that is STEM education. We are aware that National Education Policy, 2020 is a revolutionary reform in the education system of India. Right from the Primary stage to Higher education, the NEP is multidisciplinary and research oriented.
There is a major shift from Summative and marks based assessment to a competent 360 degree assessment. Now the focus is shifted from 'rote learning' to 'experiential learning’; from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn'; from being ' job seekers' to being ' job providers'. The idea is to instill a sense of responsibility and self- evaluation from a tender age. For the students, the emphasis is on 'learn how to learn' and how to become lifelong learners.
Right now it is our responsibility to ensure the proper implementation of the policy for fruitful results.
Being the heads of institutions, we need to realise the bonus we shoulder, the power we carry and act accordingly.
In our school, we are teaching the practical use of knowledge from primary classes. STEM learning has actually opened new magical doors. When kids perform even simple experiments, they retain the knowledge gained from the chapter. Our students are not only studying about business, they have developed their own business and running it successfully under the name, Melange. They prepare handicrafts items, paper quilling jewellery, cloth bags, paper bags, arrange food stalls ,games stalls , etc. in the school premises and sold the products during Parents Teachers' Meetings .Then the profits were shared with Old Age Homes and Orphanages of the nearby area. This way they learnt how to establish business and how to be socially responsible and compassionate.
We are instilling the feeling of care for environmental issues in the tender minds of students. We have initiated a unique project - Bottle Water Harvesting .The students pour down the leftover water from their bottles into particular sinks installed for the purpose while leaving from school. This water goes to our rain water harvesting system. This project has made students realize the value of even single drop of water.
A strong team ensures success
A good teacher can instil a love of loving, a good leader can instil a love of taking and handling responsibilities efficiently. I inspire my subordinates to try new concepts and ventures that develop both their personal and professional skills. I have hired strong candidates who can execute my ideas and encourage them to adhere to high standards of professionalism. I ensure that the existing team members train new members to enhance productivity. This also helps in strengthening the bond between them. I understand the value of team work and know how to incorporate and harness everyone’s skills for the betterment of the institution.
We just need to keep on improvising .Just as we keep on updating our apps, exactly in the same way we need to update ourselves and our ways of teaching. Change is the only constant thing. We have to keep on modifying our approach for the benefit of students and society. We still need to explore new horizons of success.
I take inspiration from Robert Frost as he quoted :
'The woods are lovely dark and deep
But I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep
And miles to go before I sleep.'
