My K12 Story, Journey So Far: Dr. Cdr Kartikay Saini, Chairman of Scottish High International School

SHARING AN INSPIRING AND EVENTFUL JOURNEY OF DR. CDR KARTIKAY SAINI - AN EDULEADER AND CHAIRMAN OF SCOTTISH HIGH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, GURUGRAM.

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE

Education calls for constant ‘Editing’. It must stand up to the fast-changing demands of the age and the challenges of society. This is why and how Scottish High International School came into being. We started as an idea where diversity is celebrated, a place where every child can find his or her fair spot, either through the diversity of curricula or the multiplicity of options and opportunities.

In other words, ‘Education’ found a universal perspective when we set sail on this journey 15 years ago. Bringing together a diverse curriculum--ICSE, ISC, IBDP, Cambridge Curriculum, all under one roof. Putting together a system of education that is well integrated with experiential learning, sports and human values.

Moreover, education that is holistically well-organised, integrating special education for children with special needs and much more. By virtue of this, today we have proudly emerged as the torchbearer in presenting education as a comprehensive and inclusive proposal, pan India.

However, today we are in the midst of an unprecedented crisis that has completely caught us off-guard. And ‘Education & Schooling’ is not left unscathed by this unannounced call of calamity, brutally challenging our conventional school of thought. So here we are, head-on, confronting the challenger, no matter the odds.

The show must go on

The pandemic may have derailed our everyday lives, but it could not stop us from doing what we were doing. We had to keep moving. Our team of enterprising and dedicated teachers, staff members, mentors and counsellors strived to ensure that the classrooms fit perfectly in the screens. And this got us in the top gear to a pathbreaking journey of online learning, fluid and uninterrupted!

Picking up steam

At Scottish High, online learning is not a new concept by any means. Motorized and powered with updated tools of technology, well established set up, vital installations and resources to drive virtual learning at full steam, and the team of self-propelled teachers, the School dynamically shifted its classrooms on the screens of computers and smartphones.

Optimizing on the same, going strong with the various technology-driven network, online collaboration, online research, virtual exchange programs et al., the transition to online learning and interactive classrooms not only continued the momentum of learning but also empowered students with the latest trends in communication and technology, leveraged with licensed software viz. Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and so forth.

Additionally, with the virtual sharing of the curriculum, online programs/events/ videos coupled with the support help desk to answer the queries of students, the academics became easily accessible at the click of a button.

We are delighted to state that one of the first in the country to launch a full-scale online curriculum, Scottish High has successfully managed to point the way forward.

Social Distancing with Emotional Alliance

The ongoing lockdown, the containment measures of self-isolation and social distancing becoming the new norms of today have severely overthrown the perspective of physical presence and closeness. At Scottish High, we have always interpreted Schooling to be much more than School. It is not only about the subjects or the skills the students learn in the classroom. It is also about compassion, companionship, camaraderie and care!

While Scottish High takes a proactive stance in addressing the social-emotional needs of students, the school also takes into account the aspect of a student’s social relationships, and his/her connect with classmates, teachers, mentors, family and friends.

Keeping this in view, Scottish High teachers ensure that virtual classrooms, online learning and social distancing is not misunderstood as emotional distancing. For this, the teachers regularly schedule virtual home visits to know the well-being of students and their family. Encouraging students to make the best use of the time by reconnecting with friends and families, personalised calls to get health updates, having unfiltered conversations with students and their parents through audio or video calls, individualised greetings and cards to wish for their wellbeing and with many more ‘must do’ initiatives, the School continues to bring about a big shift in the way online learning is looked at.

The defining moment

Pushing the limits of virtual learning, connecting the dots for a promising future, taking schooling beyond classrooms, bringing hearts together, Scottish High effectively strives to use this time as a turning point to stake claim in the holistic and inclusive future of learning.
